PIENSA SOL is an idea contest about the future of Puerta del Sol of Madrid. It is promoted by the community of Madrid, Madrid’s city council, COAM Architecture foundation and Madrid Think Tank
In relation with the X Week of Architecture, there is a giant scale model of Puerta del Sol produced 100% on cardboard. It is going to be the epicenter of the contest for the next months.
Cartonlab, by request of Coam Foundation, has participated in the installation, structural design, and production of the model, compound by more than 165 cardboard sheets (a ton of material) and which installation was within only 24h of work.
We can find walking through the model a few audiovisual pieces that show us the history of Puerta del Sol from many perspectives. On the other side, Jose Luis Rayos developed a wonderful illumination piece inspired by the traditional “Tío Pepe”.

“Piensa Sol” is a giant model of 250m2 at 1/10 scale of the famous “Puerta del Sol” square in Madrid. The whole model was designed and manufactured 100% in white finished cardboard. The project was commissioned by Madrid City Council to mark the competition of architectural ideas on the urban future of the area.
CartonLAB participated in the assembly, structural design and production of the model, which is composed of over 165 sheets of cardboard, over 1000kg of material, and whose installation was completed in just 24 hours.
The model hosts several audiovisual pieces showing the “Puerta del Sol” from different social perspectives and features square transit between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the successive transformations over time.
