Sustainable events in hotels. Cartonboard solutions for IDB Invest
Credits
Our work for IDB Invest is a good example of how to propose sustainable events in hotels through cardboard design. The client, in this case, is the renowned Inter-American Investment Corporation, whose commitment to sustainability is increasingly strong. On the occasion of the Sustainability Week held at the Hilton Hotel in Miami, they asked us to design the event spaces. It was quite a challenge, due to the size of the spaces, but we were able to meet it successfully. We tell you how.
For large spaces, great cardboard solutions
The gigantic hall of the Hilton Hotel was the event’s busiest space. It had to be turned into a cozy place to chat with attendees, receive guests or take a break. Let’s review needs and solutions.
- Five large columns to cover that we turned into tree trunks. The idea worked very well and even resulted in a very practical reduced version for signage.
- For the rest areas we opted for circular benches of large diameter and solid structure tested in a previous project.
- We used versatile Brasilia stools that served mainly as a low side table.
- We set up two photocalls in the hall space. One as a wall covering, representing the graphics of the event in layers of cardboard. The other with interlocking modules with the logos of the sponsors of the event.
The screen, a universal room divider
The networking room was also quite large. We had to furnish it and divide it to create work spaces with some privacy. We came up with the idea of designing a large screen composed of several parts with an original play of volumes.
To highlight:
- Its flat and high central structure.
- The pleated screens located on both sides of the central piece.
- The printing and cutting of the screens with Ibero-American plant inspiration.
- A border at floor level with the same vegetal motifs as the screens.
- The solid system of legs to fit each part
We also designed another folding screen with a similar structure, but in a reduced format. With less height, semicircular shape and only two layers. In this case it was used as a photocall, so it included corporeal signs with corporate information of the event.
Vegetation, a perfect ally of cardboard design
Using natural vegetation to decorate sustainable events in hotels works perfectly. Moreover, it fits like a glove with cardboard design and its philosophy. For Sustainability Week, plants were distributed throughout the Hilton. They looked especially good on the two smaller stages, where most of the speakers’ presentations took place.
As scenery we also included various formats of corporeal signs and a modular structure of interlocking slats acting as a backdrop for the stage. Something similar to what we did at the Alicante Film Festival.
Catalog furniture to the rescue
When organizing sustainable events in hotels, furniture needs arise, as in all of them. We are fortunate to have already accumulated a lot of available designs. A good catalog adapts to any need. At IDB’s Sustainability Week, we turned to some old acquaintances, such as the round table and the Brasilia stools and side tables, which always work. We also added stools with faceted tops for the networking area that we have already used in projects such as the Carmencita spice roadshow.
By the way, among the customized elements of this project we created a new member for the Brasilia family, the lectern that was omnipresent every day in several locations of the event.
